Haiti has the highest cervical cancer rate in the world at 94 cases per 100,000 with an estimated 1,500 deaths a year. Pap smear screening, which has dramatically reduced death from cervical cancer in many countries is generally not available in Haiti which has only four pathologists for a country of 10 million people. Through a concerted effort of government, clinics and NGOs a national campaign to prevent cervical cancer has started. With your help we will be able to join this effort and achieve our goal of screening 1000 women in our rural community for cervical cancer using state of the art HPV testing and colposcopy. UPDATE 8/25/19 Our Cervical Cancer Screening program started today! We are using efficient group visits to scale up quickly. Our first group screening session was today. 23 women received education on cervical cancer screening and then were screened with blind vaginal swabs for HPV (the virus that causes cervical cancer). The specimens were delivered to the lab in Port-au-Prince on 8/28/19 for testing in collaboration with Family Health Ministries.
UPDATE 9/30/19 In two groups sessions in one month, we have provided cervical cancer education and screening to 87 women.
This program like all our others would not be possible without the generous support of our donors. Your donations will help us increase the number of women we can screen to help prevent cervical cancer in our community. Thank you for your support and for the generous donors who made this program possible.
